posted September 16th, 2008
Michael D. Spiritos, M.D., has been named Duke Medicine medical director of specialty practices in Wake County, a role in which he will work to facilitate the growth and development of the private diagnostic clinic (PDC) practices there. Spiritos also will remain chief of medical oncology at Duke Raleigh Cancer Center.
As medical director of specialty practices, Spiritos will focus on several key areas with a primary goal to provide easy access to care and resources provided by Duke practitioners in Wake County. With his background in community oncology, Spiritos will provide guidance and mentorship to these practices, and will help facilitate access to the resources of the health system. He also will focus on building strong relationships between the individual departments and their respective practice specialties in Wake County.
A third area of focus will be to strengthen relationships with other providers in the community as well as the community at large. With a key role in the growth and development in medical specialty practices, Spiritos also will focus on physician recruitment efforts in the Wake County area. In addition, he will support the development of Wake County projects, including those in Knightdale and Morrisville.
Spiritos joined Duke Raleigh Cancer Center in July 2007 from a hospital-based oncology practice in Abington, Pa., outside of Philadelphia. There, he helped to build and develop a large community cancer program that was competitive with regional cancer centers. In his current role as chief of medical oncology, Spiritos supports the growth of the oncology program at Duke Raleigh, including the addition of multi-disciplinary clinics in prostate, lung and breast cancer while also seeing patients in the hematology/oncology clinic.
