Shauna Coleman: Volunteering in the spirit of MLK

posted January 18th, 2010

Shauna Coleman, a patient resource manager in Cardiology, is committed to community service.

For 23 years she has been a dedicated member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, serving for the past five years as archivist for the Sigma Tau Omega Chapter of the sorority. "As part of her work," says Emily Dickens, the chapter vice president, "Shauna organized and relocated nearly 20 years of documents and mementos for the chapter, all in an effort to meet the sorority's record keeping requirements."

Shauna has also used her professional training to serve the sorority, helping to implement a "Biggest Loser" program, based on the TV show. The program helped members to monitor their weight and blood pressure. Shauna also assisted in manager blood drives, cancer awareness projects, and other initiatives.

In addition, she has served as the vice president of the Ivy Community Service Foundation, the sorority's 501(c)(3) fundraising organization, and continues to work on writing grants and proposals for the organization.

Of course, her work is in addition to her excellent service as a patient resource manager. "She always adds an extra personal touch, and it is not uncommon to hear patients remark that they appreciate the level of attention given to them by Shauna," states Sherri Swan-Nesbit, fellow patient resource manager. "With Shauna, there never seems to be an idle moment."

Shauna was one of DUH's 2010 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Caregiver Award nominees. Learn more about others nominees and the 2010 MLK Community Caregiver here.
