Meet a great nurse: Melanie Mabrey

posted October 5th, 2009

Melanie Mabrey is one of 10 DUHS nurses who received the Great 100 Award this year, a statewide recognition program honoring 100 registered nurses who exemplify nursing excellence.

Here are some comments about Melanie from her Great 100 nominator: "The nominee practices with the highest level of professionalism. Each member of the health care team fully trusts her patient care interpretations and decision-making. Frequently the physicians will call her for advice on difficult patients because of her specific patient population expertise. She currently practices in multiple arenas in the health system, always keeping the appropriate colleagues informed and updated. As a long-time Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist, I have found her descriptions and conclusions to be of the highest integrity. The nominee's involvement in the entire health system's point-of-care blood glucose testing product selection process, monitoring of processes and data, and follow-up demonstrates an extraordinary degree of accountability and a willingness to undertake complex institutional projects. As a member of the sub-committee on diabetes management of the health system Clinical Alignment Committee, she is guiding and contributing to solutions aimed at providing the highest level of diabetes care across the system. One of her colleagues frequently comments on her ability to speak the truth, even when difficult, in a manner that is open, honest and provides insight and suggestions for improvement. Her integrity and honest communication style combined with her tenacity has garnered broad support for her endeavors in diabetes care."

Each of DUHS' Great 100 is dedicated, talented, knowledgeable. You'll be meeting them individually in Inside Online videos in the near future.

Mary Ann Fuchs, chief nursing officer and patient care services officer at DUHS, said the Great 100 winners are a testament to the impact nurses are making at work and in their communities.

“Day in and day out, nurses, like those being honored with this award, go above and beyond the call of duty to deliver innovative, extraordinary care to patients,” said Fuchs. “We are proud of their continued dedication to the nursing profession and their dedication to patient care.”
