Girl Scout Troop 417 entered the lobby of Duke Children’s in May, weighted down with large boxes.
They weren’t delivering their trademark Girl Scout cookies but a much more valuable gift for patients: approximately 180 VHS tapes and DVDs of various kid-friendly movies.
The girls, who attend local middle schools Phillips, Carolina Friends, Smith, and McDougle, brainstormed ideas for the project in order to earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can earn.
Based on their own experiences with family members in the hospital, they came up with the idea to collect movies to provide much needed entertainment for patients on the wards, solicited donations, and set up drop-off locations at the YMCA, local schools, Blockbuster Video stores, and churches. The group was formally thanked by several staff members from Children’s Hospital, including pediatrics chief Joseph St. Geme, M.D.
