Congratulations to the Strength, Hope and Caring (SHC) Award recipients for Fall 2009. The SHC awards are given quarterly to recognize employees for outstanding performance and demonstrating the characteristics of Strength, Hope and Caring in their daily work. The following are a few words from the nominators.
Hanean Sarsour, RN, on Unit 5-1 General Medicine/Dialysis, is a nurse who is always professional. She is a new nurse; however, since she has been on the unit, she has been instrumental with helping improve teamwork and cohesion. She knows how to identify issues and come up with different initiatives to roll out to the staff to improve the work climate on the unit. For example, she and her peers developed “No IV Beeping.” With this initiative, Hanean taught the nursing staff the importance of not ignoring the IV, even if it is not assigned to you, and to take care of the IV for patient safety and customer service. Since then, there has been a dramatic decrease in the alarms going unnoticed. She is an example of nursing excellence. She really understands how important building staff morale is and that peer satisfaction is important for overall employee satisfaction.
Jasmine Scott, Food and Nutrition associate, informed staff that as she entered the patient room to deliver a tray, the patient “did not look right and we should check on her.” She told us that someone needed to come quickly. We entered the room and immediately called a Rapid Response. The patient was in distress, and was on her way to the Critical Care Unit within 20 minutes. Thanks to Jasmine, we were made aware that a patient was not doing well, and we were able to get her the care she needed immediately. Jasmine is a very caring person. She really cares about her co-workers and patients.
