DRAH celebrates Red Apple Designation
posted November 3rd, 2009Duke Raleigh Hospital received the NC Prevention Partners’ (NCPP) Red Apple designation for its commitment to providing a healthy food environment and choices to its patients, visitors and employees. Duke Raleigh is the first hospital in the DUHS and one of 29 hospitals across the state to receive the designation for making healthy food more available, visible and affordable in all food service areas.
DRAH employees celebrated the designation on Oct. 29 with an apple bar featuring red and green apples, dips and toppings.
This designation follows the renovation of the Duke Raleigh Café and the redesign of its menu to offer healthier food choices, nutrition labeling and innovative dining options to patients, visitors and staff. Nutrition Services at Duke Raleigh partnered with the Duke Raleigh Wellness Center to provide updated nutrition information for soups, entrees and side items as well as healthy recipes to its visitors and employees.
The Red Apple is the highest designation that can be achieved by a food establishment. Hospitals were judged in the following areas:
• Providing access to healthy foods.
• Developing a pricing structure that provides incentives to employees to purchase healthy items.
• Implementing marketing strategies to promote healthy foods.
• Using benefit design and/or wellness incentives to encourage behavior change.
• Implementing an education campaign to promote the healthy food environment
with staff and visitors.
