Revamped holiday event, reception set Dec. 18 for staff, faculty

December 18th, 2009

Staff and faculty are invited to celebrate the spirit of the holidays at a musical event and reception at Duke Chapel on Dec. 18.

Details will be communicated soon on Duke Hospital's plans.

The event, called "Sharing Our Joy," will feature more than 30 staff and faculty members as part of the 2009 Duke Community Chorus.

The program, under the direction of Tim Smith from the Raleigh Jazz Orchestra, will feature several talented soloists, a singing family, a men's a capella group and the Friends in Harmony, which is made up of Duke staff and community talent. Also performing will be students from the Durham School of the Arts, several of whom are children of parents who work at Duke.

The event includes two 45-minute performances during the lunch hours of 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. to allow more people to attend. Desserts and hot beverages will be served on the Duke Chapel lawn beginning at 11:30 a.m. The Chelsea Chimes Hand Bell Choir will perform outdoors during the reception. Doors to the chapel open at 11:45 a.m. for the first performance, which begins at noon. The doors open for the second performance at 1 p.m.

The holiday reception featuring the musical talents of Duke staff and faculty replaces the holiday parties held previously at the Bryan Center and Searle Center and the holiday suncatchers distributed in years past.
